Biz break: Oracle plans to cut up to 1,000 jobs in Europe

Oracle plans to cut as many as 1,000 jobs in Europe, the CFDT labor union said on its Internet site today.

Of the total, about 250 jobs will be lost in France, equivalent to 16 percent of the company's workforce there, the CFDT said, citing meetings between Oracle management and the works committee on June 29 and 30.

Oracle "is forecasting growth that is significantly inferior to what was expected" as a justification for the cuts, and said they could help "maintain the operating margin to enable Oracle to stick to its long-term strategy," according to the CFDT. Oracle had 86,000 employees worldwide as of May 31.
