Microsoft announced the rebranding of SQL Services as SQL Azure in the first half of July 2009, a move that was accompanied by the transition of the SQL Data Services under the Microsoft SQL Azure Database brand. It wasn’t until mid-August 2009 that SQL Azure went live, with Microsoft starting to hand out invitations to the private testing of the Community Technology Preview development milestone. Now, the SQL Azure Migration Wizard is available, to help customers migrate local SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 databases into SQL Azure.
Version 0.2.0 of SQL Azure Migration Wizard went live on CodePlex on August 31, 2009, and has been labeled an Alpha release, indicating that the solution is still in the early stages of the development process. The project is available under a Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL), which is a Microsoft open-source license.
