The Stack: Encouraging Adoption Through Ease of Use

Most of the open source applications in the world are missing their stack. The stack is the complete suite of software that actually makes an application work. These are the prerequisites, the plugins, the installer, the management tools, and the application itself. If you're writing a game, then you might have some sound libraries and a 3-D rendering engine as part of your stack. If you're writing a desktop app, then you might have a windowing application programming interface like GTK+. If you're writing a server application, you might have Apache and MySQL as part of your stack.

Sidmach, Microsoft advocate business intelligence for enterprise growth

Most organisations’  pathway to  expansion and productivity is limited by fragmentation, duplication and paucity of information with which to recognise, share and apply knowledge to make better and timely decisions.  However, as information continues to grow at an exponential rate, there is need for organisations to manage data and make it readily accessible through the adoption of technology for better business opportunities and outcomes.
Mike Olajide, managing director, Sidmach Technologies Nigeria, a foremost Information and Communication Technology (ICT) firm in Nigeria made these remarks at a seminar entitled, “Business Intelligence: The Competitive Advantage” held in Lagos recently.
He noted that a new survey by IDC reveals that the information contained in enterprises worldwide is expected to reach 120,000 petabytes by 2010.

Five Reasons Why Microsoft Shouldn't Buy Sun

News Analysis. Some people are suggesting that Microsoft should bid for Sun, in wake of apparently failed talks with IBM. They're mistaken.

Sun would be nothing but trouble for Microsoft. I doubt that anyone at Microsoft is seriously even considering a bid for Sun. The deal is a non-starter because:

IBM Still the Best Option for Sun, Analysts Say

Despite reports that IBM has taken its $7 billion offer off the table, Sun’s best option is to broker a deal to be bought by IBM, analysts say. There are not a lot of possible suitors out there for a server vendor that is struggling in an already struggling market, and remaining an independent company isn’t a good option for Sun, they said. IBM offers Sun the best chance at a good selling price, and is the best option among HP and Oracle. Though Cisco has been mentioned as a possible buyer, analysts say such a deal wouldn’t make sense for Cisco.

After IBM, What Now for Sun?

Now that merger talks between IBM (IBM) and Sun Microsystems (JAVA) have broken off, the future of Sun, long one of the tech industry's most innovative and dynamic companies, is in doubt.

The breakdown puts Sun in an extremely weak position, and analysts expect its stock price to come under severe pressure. The stock had been trading at about $4 a share, but rose to above $8 when word of the IBM talks leaked in late March. "Sun is now sort of damaged goods," says Peter Falvey, a partner at Boston-based Revolution Partners, which invests in Silicon Valley firms. "If IBM got under the covers and didn't like what they saw, then what does that mean for other potential buyers?"

Next-gen SQL injection opens server door

A vulnerability estimated to affect more than 1 in 10 websites could go lethal with the finding that it can be used to reliably take complete control of the site's underlying server.

Research to be presented at the Black Hat security conference in Amsterdam later this month will show how so-called SQL injection attacks open the door to much more serious exploits that give hackers unfettered access to a website's database and the operating system that runs it. Penetration tester Bernardo Damele Assumpcao Guimaraes says his techniques prey on design flaws in three of the most popular databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Microsoft SQL Server.

Security Researcher to Unveil Database Server Hack at Black Hat Europe

A security researcher plans to demonstrate attacks that uses SQL injection as a stepping stone to take full control of database servers at the upcoming Black Hat Europe conference. If successfully exploited, the attacks give the hacker complete control over the database server operating system, file system and the rest of the internal network machines.

SQL injection consistently rates as one of the top vulnerabilities affecting Web applications. But for all the attention paid to it, one researcher feels the full impact of SQL injection has yet to be fully demonstrated in public.

Firefox beats IE in Europe: A sign of duopoly to come?

Mozilla's Firefox 3 is now Europe's dominant Web browser with 35.05 percent market share, beating out Internet Explorer (IE) 7's 34.54 percent share, according to data released by StatCounter and reported by Reuters.

Is this a sign of good things to come for open source? Or is it an indication that we're rapidly nearing an industry-wide duopoly: Microsoft and open source, with everything and everyone else an afterthought?

We still have a ways to go before open-source competitors in ERP, CRM, ECM, middleware, databases, operating systems, and other product segments attain Firefox's dominant share, but progress toward that goal is being made. It's not inconceivable, for example, that the server operating system race will soon be between open-source Red Hat and Microsoft, or that Sun will help to turn MySQL into a mainstream enterprise competitor against Oracle and IBM's DB2, rather than "just" the market leader in Web databases.

Black Hat Europe Researcher Hacks Database Servers

A researcher at Black Hat Europe this month will demonstrate a new hack that uses SQL injection as a stepping stone to take control of a database server.

"SQL injection becomes a stepping stone to the real target: the operating system," says Bernardo Damele, an IT security engineer based in London. "I will focus on exploiting SQL injection in a Web application to get control over the underlying OS," in addition to the database software, he says.

SQL injection is a popular attack vector in Web applications, mainly because it's one of the most common flaws found in these apps. Web application SQL injection attacks typically target client browsers, infecting them when the victim visits a compromised Website. Another SQL injection attack is on the database itself, via a Web application carrying that vulnerability.
