    SQL Speed Secrets

Have you ever had the feeling that your application was slowed down by SQL Server, but didn't know how to fix the problem?

SQL Server performance management is usually reactive and focused on server health. Database administrators (DBAs) respond to trouble rather than avoiding it in the first place. And visibility is largely restricted to watching the database server, rather than understanding how SQL Server directly affects application users.

Consultative selling is getting a lot of buzz in sales circles these days as the answer to what ails sales organizations in this recession. But there can also be some confusion around what exactly the term means. Some people may even find the concept intimidating initially. To help clear the air and help you get started realizing the benefits of consultative selling, Channel Insider spoke with sales consultant Kendra Lee of The KLA Group. Lee's company works with solution providers to develop their sellers consultative selling practices. And before founding her own company, she was in the top 1 percent of sales representatives at IBM and was the top sales rep at Sybase. Oracle Set To Take The Lead on Cloud Computing

Sun Microsystems has been struggling for the past 5 years to be competitive and keep enough research and development to stay in the leading edge of cloud computing as IBM, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft charge forward.  Its believers remained loyal and kept developing solutions based on Sun's platforms.  In the software evaluation cycle, companies are trying to improve efficiency and decrease costs of having to deploy solutions to individual machines or servers.  Oracle has been behind the curve in this area outside of its database solutions but has succesfully masterminded takeovers of software companies that have been dominant forces in their respective markets.  Now with Oracle fighting to be a number one competitor and eventually the go-to vendor in the SaaS space, the strategic move to incorporate cloud computing into its mix of all its future offerings makes it a force to be reckoned with in terms of HaaS competing with Amazon, IBM, and Salesforce.com.

Understanding and Selecting a Database Activity Monitoring Solution

Over the past five years we have seen major changes in both the threats we face online, and the regulatory compliance landscape we do business in. Both the bad guys and the regulators are now focused on our data, not just our networks. We see breach disclosures and the regulations meant to protect them growing every year, with no end in sight. But managing this risk is more complicated than simply dropping in a firewall or installing antivirus software. Our applications and databases run in complex environments with numerous dependencies and business requirements. While we want to protect our information, we need to do it in a way that doesn't materially interfere with doing business. To balance these needs we see new technologies arise, one of the most significant of which is Database Activity Monitoring (DAM). With an estimated market size of $40M in 2006, and approximately $60M to $80M in 2007, Database Activity Monitoring rivals Data Loss Prevention in terms of market size. DAM tools provide powerful, immediate, non-intrusive benefits for security and compliance, and a long-term platform for comprehensive protection of databases and applications.

To help quantify the potential savings of SQL Database consolidation within your organization, Dell has partnered with Principled Technologies to bring you this consolidation whitepaper as they examined an example test case: How many Dell PowerEdge 2650s can you consolidate onto a single PowerEdge R805 with a Dell PowerVault MD1000 storage array attached?

Read this consolidation whitepaper to learn how consolidating legacy Dell PowerEdge 2650 servers onto a single Dell PowerEdge R805 server with a PowerVault MD1000 storage array can yielded less than one-third the rack space usage, less than one-fourth the power, and one-eighth the number of SQL Server licenses, all while enjoying the same or better performance.

The setting Sun: responses to the acquisition

Details have emerged about Oracle's views on Java and Solaris. The open source software community has also articulated its own views about the acquisition--some are hopeful that Sun's key open source software projects will be given new life and more progressive stewardship while others are calling for forks.

Oracle buys Sun for $7.4 billion

Oracle has acquired Sun Microsystems, in a $7.4 billion deal. Oracle will pay $9.50 per share for Sun, or $5.6 billion net of Suns cash and debt, with Oracle predicting that Sun will add $1.5 billion in operating profit in the first year. The deal is expected to be completed by the summer.

The purchase will give Oracle a major launch into the hardware market, where it has previously only had a very limited presence with its Oracle HP Database Machine. Suns servers and Solaris operating system have long been an important platform for Oracleís applications. The deal will also give Oracle ownership of Java, a major building block in its own middleware platform, plus Sunís storage systems, giving Oracle a comprehensive stack from application to disk. Oracle also gains the MySQL open source database.

What's Microsoft Up To In Storage?

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has been making quite a bit of noise over its new operating systems lately, and even a bit around virtualization, but when it comes to data storage products, there's been nothing but deafening silence.

Think about it: over the last 18 months or so there have been announcements about Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, Hyper-V, the Azure cloud platform, and plenty more besides.

But where in all this are the announcements about Windows Storage Server 2008? Or an update to Storage Server 2003? Or anything else of interest to storage professionals? Server 2008 had some interesting storage features, but the product is a long way from the bold vision the software giant was pursuing just a few years ago.

Database glitch causes Windows 7 download server meltdown

When Microsoft released the Windows 7 beta for public download in January, the resulting demand overwhelmed its servers, delaying the launch by a day and giving the software giant’s capacity planners a black eye.

This morning at 6AM PDT, when Windows 7 Release Candidate downloads were officially made available for MSDN and TechNet subscribers, it looked like a sequel to that botched release. After 20 minutes or so of smooth downloads, both sites began bogging down, and the situation deteriorated rapidly as the minutes passed. For several hours after the official launch, most subscribers who tried to log on found themselves unable to reach the download pages.

    Protect Your SQL Server Databases

SQL Server databases should be protected on a scheduled basis. A SQL database actually consists of two files; the database file (*.mdf) and a transaction log file (*.ldf). These files must match exactly for a backup copy of the database to restore properly.
